Liu Chien-Kuang works with glass as a living material loaded with stories. His sculptural works combine the tradition of blowing with elements of wood, paper, and stone, as well as other industrial materials, which characterize his upbringing in Taiwan. By revisiting forgotten techniques and shaping new expressions, he investigates how cultural heritage, identity, and power are reflected in the material.
The works move in the field of tension between East Asian forms and European crafts. Here, glass becomes both body and memory – a way of depicting complex relationships to history, migration, and belonging. In Liu Chien-Kuang’s practice, the hand is central, but so is the invisible: that which is shaped by time, place, and stories that are in danger of being lost.
