Gotland Museum

Lilla Bjers, Stenkyrka

The grave fi eld covers 15 hectares, making it one of the island’s largest. The over 1,000 visible graves are dominated by the mounds and stone ships. Most of the mounds have a diameter of over six metres. A prehistoric road runs through
the grave field.

Vikingtida gravfält

Gamla hamn, Fårö

Along the coast there is a grave field with 15 graves in the form of low mounds. Next to the ancient harbour, now a basin cut off from the sea, there is the ruin of a small Medieval chapel belonging to St Olof’s Church and the remains of a churchyard. Finds suggest the existence of a harbour and burial site that was
used for about 400 years up until the 14th century.

Lilla Ihre, Hellvi

This grave fi eld is one of the largest on Gotland, with over 600 visible graves from the Iron Age. The southern area has the most recent graves, from the Viking Age. The site comprises stone ships and mounds which have yielded many weapons. A picture stone was also uncovered during one excavation.

Trullhalsar, Norrlanda

The grave field has around 350 graves in the form of mounds, stone circles and stone ships. Many of them are edged with carefully laid chipped limestone. The excavated graves
show that the women in particular took with them grave gifts, showing their high status in society.

Torsburgen, Kräklingbo

The largest prehistoric fortification in the Nordic region covers an area of around 1.15 km2. Torsburgen is made up in part by natural cliffs, and has a defensive rampart 2 km long and 7 m high along the south side. The site is probably part of a larger defence system built in different stages, including during the Viking age.

gammalt trähus

Ödegården Fjäle, Ala

One of Sweden’s best preserved farming areas from the Iron Age and Middle Ages, with building foundations, graves and wells, along with the reconstruction of a farmhouse. The farm was abandoned in Medieval times, but the atmosphere remains
intact.

två bildstenar

Picture stones at Änge, Buttle

The two stones still stand in their original location. One is 3.7 m tall, making it the largest picture stone found on the island. The stones are from the Viking age, and were put up along one
of the main routes across Lojsta moor.

Picture stone, Hablingbo

The picture stone previously stood south of the church’s southern wall. A runestone of the same shape as the picture stone was found in the churchyard. The text says: “Vatgair and Halgair raised this stone for Hailgi, their father, who has travelled west with the Vikings.” Both stones are now in the church.

vall

Well-preserved Viking town wall.

Paviken, Västergarn

One of Gotland’s larger harbours and trading posts, with traces of shipbuilding, crafts and settlements. It was set up in the 8th
century and was used for around 300 years. Just south of here is a well-preserved Viking town wall and next to that the remains of a Medieval tower.

Stavgard Viking Village

Stavgard is a recreated Viking village and in the summer it is filled with visitors and Vikings. Here, blacksmithing is done, cloth is woven and dyed, bread is baked and various crafts are carried out. Some of them you can try out yourself.

Stavgard Vikingagård i Burs!

The places in the guide can be a bit difficult to find. A car or other transportation is necessary to visit most of the places.
