Lambs has always been a natural part of the Gotland fauna and they are today so common that the number of lambs actually exceeds the number of inhabitants on the island. There are currently about 73 000 lambs, and 58 000 people. An important detail is that we Gotland not have any sheep, which may seem contradictory. The explanation is simply that we call all the animals lambs and kids “lammungar”, lamb kids.
However, we are not entirely consistent in this regard. One of our most important pieces of cultural heritage is the Gute sheep. It is a breed that is well adapted for the Gotland countryside, able to go outside all year round and incredibly beautiful with their characteristic horns.
